On the 23 October, the Basileus declared the creation of the Burnham Virtual Football League (BVFL), a body made for the express purpose of providing entertainment to Burnhamite citizens. When the BVFL was declared, so were six football clubs to participate in the league. Each County in Burnham has a football club (Mossroof Raiders, Cassidy Kavelleers, and Ramblers), as does the Capital Settlership (Burnham Saints) and the Antient Settlership (Beacon Antients). Both the Resort Settlerships have pooled their resources and players for a single team (Footscray Football Club (FC)).
By the 25 October, a total of fifteen games had been played between the six teams, which closed the quarter-finals of the league. The BVFL table is now as follows:
1st: Cassidy Kavelleers (4 wins, 1 loss, 12 goals)
2nd: Mossroof Raiders (3 wins, 2 losses, 11 goals)
=3rd: Burnham Saints (2 wins, 2 losses, 1 draw, 16 goals)
=3rd: Footscray FC (2 wins, 2 losses, 1 draw, 15 goals)
=5th: Ramblers (1 win, 3 losses, 1 draw, 8 goals)
=5th: Beacon Antients (1 win, 3 losses, 1 draw, 6 goals)
The Semi-final will consist of two games:
Cassidy Kavelleers vs Burnham Saints
Mossroof Raiders vs Footscray FC
Whichever two football clubs win the semi-finals will go on into the grand final.
The BVFL has actually attracted attention from across the Würtige Empire, with none other than the Würtige Emperor himself, HIM Arthur I betting ten Würtige Marks with the Basileus that the Burnham Saints will win the League Trophy. The Basileus, to his credit, has bet that the Cassidy Kavelleers will be the ones taking home the big win.
The semi-finals will be very close games. While both the Burnham Saints and Footscray FC are very aggressive teams with higher numbers of goals than anybody else in the league, the ‘Kavelleers and the ‘Raiders are well known for their defensive capabilities and high win counts. The Cassidy Kavelleers, trained in the flat and grassy land of the Low Wold Settlership (the Low Wold grasses are actually cut and maintained by helpful park rangers from the United Kingdom), are arguably some of the best footballers in all of Burnham. Teams like the ‘Saints and Footscray Fc are hindered by their urban environments (both are largely residential or Government areas, with little greenery.), and the Ramblers are impeded by the large forested areas that make up most of the County. Only the ‘Raiders have been able to overcome their urban roots, although, what with the County also containing an Inn, coaches have complained that keeping the players from drink has been a Herculean effort.
Regal Telecommunications (RTC) will be broadcasting both the semi-finals and the grand final some time next week, and may include commentary from the Basileus and other Burnhamite citizens.
